My review
4 stars
Great start, well set. The first chapter sets the mood and theme for the entire novel, telling us what to expect: intrigue, betrayal, an already well-established complex magic system, interesting artifacts, rituals, secret passages, language according to the period, and a steampunk-ish society with magic.
Interesting characters, male and female. Although it's a standalone, the first chapters feel like we were dropped in a pre-existing series. The author is sensitive to this and added a short glossary of terms at the end, which I truly appreciated.
By winning a game in a carnival, Rafe is invited by the Prefect to create a spell to shroud the island from the world. This makes his life a target of the "opposition".
Plot-driven. Fast-paced with lots of plans to put in motion. Filled with action and adventure and plot twists.
I liked Cassidy and her deadly parasol a lot.Â
I recommend this companion to the Dreamweaver Chronicles to fans of the Preston series, steampunk-ish Sherlock Homes, Deborah Harkness, and Terry Pratchett.
Thank you, author, for the copy. My thoughts are honest and voluntary.
