Selena Flowers and her mother Fiona move to a big old mansion after Aunt Ada dies. Fiona knows a lot about the lore but seems aloof most of the time. There are magic and dark secrets to unveil and the author grabs our attention since the first chapter when a zombie mermaid tries to come in the night to greet Selena and tries to bite her to make her a zombie. Faustina the 12-year-old zombie is my favorite character. Horror elements. Some adults have a part in the narrative as well making the themes sometimes for upper teen readers. Selena doesn't have to deal only with Faustina, there are some mean characters at the Madderly Academy as well, but I am glad she finds in Chloe a great friend. The story picks up when the two friends learn that there is a necklace that can protect them from the plot of the undead. This is the start of a series that combines mermaids and zombies in a fun creative way. Horror for middlegraders and older readers that makes for a good fun zombie-like plot twist summer read.
