... I didn't like this one. 🙈 It was ok I guess. Maybe I had really high expectations because of one of my fav youtubers. I finished it, and it took a while because it didn't make me want to return to it. The end is emotional, but overall, the entire book is not exciting.
Also... some of the things I don't like about it are the same elements I don't like about Stormlight Archieve.
This is a 90s book. Usually, my fav era for epic fantasy is from 80s to 00s, but I didn't like any of the characters enough to feel their losses or victories.
Still, it's a classic, and you should read it. It helps to understand how it influenced many contemporary fantasy authors.

I had such high expectations for this one. I don't mind the writing style of a classic. Usually, I prefer high fantasy from the 80s to the 00s, but this 90s didn't excite me as I hoped as a standalone. Mainly, it was just that. It didn't make me want to rush to the next chapter, but I finished it, and it was tragic and sad even in victory.
It's well written, the repetitions make it easy to consolidate some themes, goals, and facts, and the author explores his themes (memory, bringing back their home against tyranny, political intrigue, revenge); both sides win but also lose.
I liked some of the female characters, and although they are less silly and annoying than Shallan Davan (sorry, not a fan of stormlight archieve), they also weren't amazing in their choices. Some Deus Ex Machina effects and scenes just for the sake of giving some adult content without advancing much the plot...plus the pacing slowed me down. I didn't like Devin's part in the plot also who and he is one of the main focus characters (pov).
I am glad I read it, though. It helps me understand the influence of this work on contemporary authors.
