Amazing . Told with such reflective educational tone.
5+ What a stunning memoir, to view war through the eyes of a young child, forced to grow up so quickly with the such traumatizing experiences. The book is succinct and focuses on the survival of a family through the Yugoslav 1990s wars until they find refugee intervention in the USA. I recommend it to all ages.
So much trauma can build character and humble a person, or destroy them, but she is such a strong person because many don't know how to keep so much horror within. I am grateful to have read this book, and that the author brought forward all her experiences, emotions, fear, details of running away from home, losing a country's identity, living in a refugee camp, staying united with her family and never letting her grades go down. Such a testament of courage. I appreciate the few photos, and seeing the house they left behind I felt a terrible sadness for it all, for the easy commands the powerful give and the long hardship the little ones must deal as consequences, something that isn't fixed in one day. I am glad this family found a way through.

A POWERFUL, DEEPLY PERSONAL MEMOIR OF A CHILDHOOD INTERRUPTED
At just seven years old, Milica dreamed only of carefree days—picking wild violets in the fields, laughing with friends, and basking in the warmth of her small village in Dalmatia, Yugoslavia. She could never have imagined what lay ahead: the scream of grenades, the shattering of glass, and the terror of fleeing home under fire. Her childhood was torn apart by war, and in its place came bomb shelters, refugee camps, and a relentless fight for survival.
With unflinching honesty, Milica offers a child’s-eye view of displacement, loss, and the unbreakable bonds of family, revealing the human cost of war and the enduring light that carried her forward.
Now living in St. Louis, Missouri, with her husband, Justin, their son, Allen, and their puppy, Zoey, Milica Vogt is a scientist turned storyteller. For nearly two decades, she worked in the corporate world, but the voices of her past have never faded. Under a Whistling Sky is a tribute to the past, a witness to survival, and a reminder that even in the darkest of times, hope and quiet courage endure.
