DESTINTY & DISASTER

5+ This is a duology in one single volume with large font and spaces. If you've never read this author, jump into these right now. I could not stop.

I love magic family stories, think Practical Magic with a middle-grade main character, high school and college (cousin in the second part), and older generation (of female characters) that will please all ages. (Adults who love cozy, magic realism, supernatural, and series like Goodwitch and Just Add Magic) Sweet and filled with great values and kindness, the same kind of kindness we find in the characters of Nora Roberts' novels. The two stories are different. Each one solves one "magic episode." The first is so emotional with sacrifices because our main character (Celia Clearly) gets the family power for the first time and does all she can to stop her very first vision: the death of a schoolboy whom she gets to know and love. According to the family book of magic, there are many different kinds of seers, and death is not one vision they can stop, but she can't accept that, and she will try her best with her grandmother as her mentor. In the second part, Celia will become the mentor to one girl with magic who doesn't know she is spelling a boy. The only clue Celia has is that the boy affected (and who will bring doom day) is some Patrick, but there are more than two at her school.

I'm glad that Celia told her friends about her magic and that they help her as well, but mostly Celia and the new girl will solve this one. The spell is making everyone cursed with bad luck, except one person, and even Celia suffers this strike of bad luck that is spreading to the entire school like a plague. But now that THAT Patrick is super lucky, why would he want to go back to his old boring life?

The author has creative ways to approach stories and themes uniquely; instead of being one more book about this or that, it's the same with his other series. When a seeker has a vision, they can smell something specific, like baked cookies or some other scent.

This new edition has a more appealing cover for all ages, and I want more, please: give us more Celia volumes where she discovers more of the other types of seers. This is an autobuy author for me.

AMONG SERPENTS volume 2

Our main character can't win! He finally gets his sister back, but she is totally team mean-uncle and acts like a brat. He has a lot of difficulty in dealing with her, and so does the crew. But he is willing to stand by his family and do what's best, even when he has to answer to his uncle and perform every task according to his uncle's will. Lots of action, like the first, amazing descriptions of the Leviathan creatures. The ships are amazing, fighting as well. His interaction with family and his found family gives him a Luffy D Monkey kind of heart, sacrificing all for the safety and success of his crew, knowing that in their world, to succeed, they must go their separate ways. Jumping into book 3 soon.
