Wonderful in verse novels of a child who is raised by a verbally abusive, extreme, religious and prejudiced grandfather until her mother runs away with her to a "shelter" in Montana that helps one discover themselves and feel safe. We see through Kestrel's distorted perspective of the world and thoughts on how she only knew to fear everything, to see all with suspicion, until she starts seeing the world through new eyes. Very emotional and full of awareness. I love that the dogs protected her from someone more dangerous than a bear.

I also bought a copy of the audiobook to pair with the books to reread while hiking.
